Warm Bath

You set the ladle back across the basin and watch. The reflection of the maple steadies, leaf by leaf. Each drop that overflows slips over the lip and into the ferns with a sound almost too small to hear. You hear it anyway.

How it works

Every moment begins with the same option: Stay a while. It lingers where you are, with nothing to decide, and every path is still open afterward. Beyond that, up to three ways onward. Some circle back; two lead home, each with its own postcard.
